Time is right to change Man Utd's formation - Amorim declares.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was among multiple first-team stars absent from the Boxing Day win against Newcastle.

Manager Ruben Amorim contends that switching Man Utd's formation due to public scrutiny would have meant "the finish" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim ditched his trademark three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs and opted to field an orthodox back four shielded by two central midfielders.

By his own admission this at times transformed into a six-man defensive block in the final minutes as his squad clung on for a crucial result - securing only their second clean sheet of the season.

While he once notably said that even the highest authority could compel him to adjust his approach, Amorim insists the option to experiment with alternative setups has always been part of his strategy.

Yet, he emphasizes he could only implement the change when his team were performing sufficiently well - lest it would appear as if he was bowing to external noise.

"When I arrived here last season, I understood maybe I lacked the squad to perform effectively in that system, but it was the start of a process," he said.

"The goal was to build an identity. Today is a separate moment. We are missing a lot of players, and we must adjust, so they understand the reason we are making changes.

"This isn't because of the influence of the media, or the supporters.

"When media talk about altering the system constantly, I can't make a change because the squad will believe I'm altering things because of external voices and I think that is the downfall for the coach.

"When we are performing strongly in our preferred setup, that becomes the opportunity to change.

"We are going to become a stronger side because when our full complement of players return, we are not planning to use three defenders in every match."

Injury Issues Persist

Having just two wins in their last eight outings before beating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is accurate to claim his team have been in good form.

He is, though, managing with a severely stretched squad, with seven first-team players already ruled out for the upcoming home game against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That figure will increase if midfielder Mason Mount fails to shake off the injury that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly urging his manager to let him to return following his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already telling me he needs to practice," revealed Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. No way. That's definitive."

The Captain's Influence Is Unwavering

However, the 31-year-old will almost certainly continue to be a prominent presence, as whereas most unavailable players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to carry on offering guidance.

"The guy is a leader," he stated. "He cannot be that guy that when he is not playing, he's silent and speaking. He's always speaking. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"He has flaws at times - the way he moves his arms - but he has a lot of strengths. After he recovers, he heads to observe the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many things that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he desires my job or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a true captain."

Recovery Schedule for Key Personnel

While the specific date for the captain's comeback - and that of fellow unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unclear, by the end of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental duty.
