Social Media Content Creators Driving Unofficial Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground economy for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Acquiring Traction Online

Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users injecting products of unknown origin.

Some professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Material Removal

According to the social media company, the service has taken down problematic content and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The organization said it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found communities with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, populated with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and detailed guides for mixing or injecting at residence.

After minutes of entering one community, a vendor shared contact information, where most transactions take place. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Details and Pricing

Within these communities, posts display dark colored packages with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should last, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Actions

A representative for the messaging service stated it actively monitored harmful material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Warnings

“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has previously encountered individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may expose users to possibly significant health risks”.
