Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
