"When are you interviewing the band?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just one problem: The sender also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're far from alone. Several high-profile admirers have openly begged for the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a close trio. Their music videos often show them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the biggest honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to form a group."

"So all is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The band have called into home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics track endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed confidence called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

But Haim will always be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
